Colourfull
The sailing season is coming to its end, and this week we have only sailed at the weekend. Having all five weekdays away from my deckhand duties has been treat, but I have done some MacOnSite work.
Nicky’s new pale shocking pink iPad arrived on Monday so I began the process of setting it up. This didn’t go as planned because I had forgotten that the new iPad would have a different connector to the old one. I don’t have the appropriate cables to connect it to the Mac which has the backup of her previous (completely dead) one. We are both very pleased with the colour that Nicky chose and have bought a protective case which is partially transparent so that we can still enjoy the colour.
We did quite a bit of laundry on Tuesday to take advantage of the weather. This included Nicky washing the starry counterpane at the laundrette while I did the supermarket shopping. For dinner I had a go at making smoked salmon soup. 40 years ago when we first met, Campbells used to do a lovely condensed smoked salmon soup which we really enjoyed, but it disappeared from the shelves after a couple of years. I was trying to emulate it and my version turned out pretty well. The only downside was that it repeated on Nicky all evening while she was at a long Vestry meeting. While initially pleasant, it didn’t continue being a positive experience.
Wednesday started wet, as we had expected, but was an enjoyable day. Nicky had won tickets in a Listener magazine prize draw to see Golda, currently on cinematic release. We were very pleased that our wee local picture theatre would accept the tickets. The film was excellent, and Helen Mirren’s portrayal of Golda Meir deserves an Oscar. The afternoon was drier than expected and we had an excellent evening, winning at the quiz with 106 points.
Thursday was clear and sunny. Nicky staffed the Aramoho Community Library. I had an amble and made pastry cases for lemon curd tarts for dinner. Mark and Krystyna came over for dinner again (loaded potato skins) as their new kitchen is not up to full functionality yet. Friday was another lovey day and we pottered at home. Frances called in late afternoon and we were very pleased to see her.
Nicky had a silent Winter Retreat day at church on Saturday so I had another pleasant walk down to the wharf. It was my 300th sailing. Afterwards Mike and I went to the street party on Guyton Street to mark its new landscaping and traffic management. Nicky came and met us at Mischief café just as we finished our lovely bacon butties.
Nicky enjoyed church again this morning. On the boat we had a training day with the Coast Guard, including them towing us, a simulated medical emergency, and the Coast Guard boat providing a tub-boat service to us. It all went very well, but we finished an hour later than I expected and I was really tired so didn’t join the rest of the crew for a drink.
The autumn colours on the trees around town and up and down the river are great at the moment. We also have some at home:
Take care, Rick and Nicky.
