Still hot

It has been another hot week, with temperatures regularly into the low 30’s. We have a had some rain and humidity, but we have still got much done in the garden. Nicky has made significant progress at the front, by weeding and planting. I have done some weeding and strimming the grass.

Sailing has been interesting for me. We are not running six days a week as we should for this time of the year, due to the continuing lack of a permanent skipper. On Wednesday we had a stop-over planned at Upokongaro. As we approached the wharf we saw that the gangway was in the river again. Our manager organised a local chap to move it enough so that we could park the boat, and the the crew manhandled it out of the water and onto the wharf with ropes. This enabled the passengers to disembark, but it was heavy cumbersome work. It took us about 45 minutes. We had to reduce our stop-over time and ended up being about half an hour late returning to the Waimarie wharf.

We had two jazz cruises to coincide with Whanganui’s Vintage Festival weekend. Nicky and Frances came along on the Friday evening jazz cruise and had a very enjoyable time.

They made a good choice as the Saturday evening jazz cruise was interrupted by an unscheduled stop-over at Upokongaro to have a new EFTPOS machine delivered. This was just after the heavens had opened and we had got drenched. Today we have sailed twice, and other than being very hot they have been more routine. Nicky had a good morning at church followed by an enjoyable parish shared lunch.

On Tuesday morning we had a chap call round to have a look at suppling and fitting fly screens to our ranch slider doors. The retractable screens that they supply will only work on two of the doors and we can’t afford them at the moment. However, we now have more information for future plans.

We had a lovely evening and BBQ with Phil, Kristina and their son Lee on Thursday. Nicky had a dip in their swimming pool which she thoroughly enjoyed. Phil and I spent much time talking about the situation on the Waimarie. Kristina has offered to come and help with our weeding. Brave lady. Her garden is immaculate, so ours will be a shock.

Jancis phoned us, to update us on her visit to the Pain Clinic. It was good to talk about the options with her.

Yesterday morning I wasn’t sailing so we went into town to see what was happening with the Vintage Festival caboodle. We enjoyed a couple of the jazz bands, some venison bacon butties from a food concession, and a hot drink with passion fruit cheesecake at Mint. Some of the vintage cars were quite interesting, and we encountered the band Hot Potato performing with a saw player:

Finally, there has been an anniversary this week - Claire has been at Anderson Lloyd for ten years. Arn’t they lucky!

Take care, Rick and Nicky.
