Elementary my Dear…

Our week has been routine, but quite busy, and punctuated with the Women’s Football World Cup. We have especially enjoyed England’s progress to the semi-finals.

Nicky was busy at church on Monday, cleaning in the morning and kitchen duty for Alpha in the evening. Her home group went to the cinema on Tuesday to see The Miracle Club and enjoyed it. She made a cheesecake on Wednesday morning ready for the Community Meal at Te Ao Hou Marae on Thursday, and undertook hospital visiting for Whanganui Anglicans in the afternoon. Nicky’s staffing of the Aramoho Library on Thursday was shorter than usual, as she accompanied me to the Gonville Medical Centre. Friday was major laundry and ironing again, but the washing did have some time outside on the rotary drier. Saturday was a Diocesan Regional Training Day for her in Palmerston North. She joined a number of other parishioners in the parish minibus for the journey, but the presentations were rather like a Curate’s Egg.

The highlight of my week was having my stitches out on Thursday afternoon. This was much easier than having them put in, but I was pleased that Nicky came with me in case I didn’t feel like driving home. The wounds are healing well and I am much more comfortable now. I’m also very pleased to be able to have a proper shower again. I’ve done more MacOnSite work this week than I have for awhile.

We have had some visitations this week. Phil called in on Monday morning with Nicky’s jacket and scarf as we had left them behind when visiting them on Sunday. He stayed for a cuppa and a yarn. Frances called in on Tuesday on her way home from work. We hadn’t seen her for about a month so it was good to catch up, and she does like the way I make coffee.

Yesterday, having just returned from having an amble, Eleanor from down the road arrived with a full carrier bag of lemons for us. We had a walk round the back garden and a sit in the sunshine by the front garden, while putting the world to rights. Just as Eleanor was about to leave, a cyclist stopped on the drive who turned out to be Baldy, the Waimarie skipper. He took over Eleanor’s seat and we had a pot of coffee together before he remounted his bike to cycle home.

In the evening Mark and Krystyna came over for dinner. I spent most of the afternoon getting our home ready and cooking dinner - roast pork with Yorkshire puds, stuffing and bacon rolls, and roast veg. My Devils on Horseback were quite good but overcooked, but the Lemon Delicious dessert was good. They’d had a challenging week with Mark having an emergency dash down to Wellington hospital to have an operation for a detached retina.

The Community Kai at the marae on Thursday was the least well attended that we have experienced, only around 35 people, but we still enjoyed chatting and eating. We met the Practice Manager for the Aramoho Medical Centre and were delighted to discover that they are open for new registrations. It is our nearest Medical Centre and has a better reputation than Gonville, so on Friday morning I dropped in our enrolment forms and hopefully we will be able to transfer. We had wanted to enrol there when we first arrived in Whanganui but were not able to as new patient registrations were closed.

We quizzed on Wednesday evening, and even though John and Tiana were with us and we scored 100 points, we only came 5th. The three teams which came second equal had a tie-breaker question to work out which victors received the spoils.

While Nicky was at church this morning I cleaned the oven and watched the FIFA Women’s football highlights. It was good to see the Matilda’s and England’s go through to the semi-finals. This afternoon we have been to the Whanganui Home Show. This event runs every year, but we didn’t go last year as we didn’t think it would be very different from the previous year. It didn’t prove to be very different this year, but we found some interesting exhibitors and bought some lovely local foods.

And finally, the Sherlock Holmes reference. The Watsonia’s have been been working on flowering all week and finally started to come out today:

Take care, Rick and Nicky.
