A little more progress

Our big house focus this week has been on the sewing room. We took advantage of the fact that the two library tables (for Nicky’s quilting) were still under the car port following the Blessing and House Warming. Their absence from the sewing room gave us space to swing the proverbial cat, get most of the furniture out, and hang lots of pictures. This has made the room tidier and more usable (Steve slept in it last night), and gives us a better idea for organising it for the future.

But wait, there’s more! Shannon from Harcourts Estate Agency delivered his house appraisal, in the sunshine on Wednesday. He reckons that in the current market our new home could fetch around $150K more than we have spent on building it. I am a little skeptical myself but am very pleased that it appears to be worth more than it has cost. Just to give us some more peace of mind, we have had the locks rekeyed. It didn’t look like we were going to get all eight original keys returned, so we decided to get a locksmith in, so that we know we have got all the keys for all the locks.

Tuesday was our 36th wedding anniversary. To celebrate we caught the bus into town (using our Bee Cards for the first time) and had breakfast at the Mud Duck’s café (both choosing Eggs Benedict with smoked salmon which was very good). We then had a look at the current ceramic sculpture exhibition across the road in the Sarjeant Gallery (it didn’t do anything for us) before catching the bus home, which again was fun. Nicky went to the Baptist church for lunch with Eleanor and their Senior Fellowship group before going on to Life Group. I started reading Andy Weir’s “Project Hail Mary”. I finished it on Friday and throughly enjoyed the Sci Fi story. Nicky is deeply into Tudor history with the C.J. Sansom Shardlake series.

The weather has got unseasonably milder as the week has progressed, but it was still quite nippy in town on Friday evening when we went to see the Lights on Bikes parade as part of the Whanganui Matariki celebrations. Matariki is the Maori new year. We enjoyed our possibly Polish Hot Dogs and sauerkraut in sourdough rolls, and seeing all the illuminated cyclists.

Yesterday we returned jigsaws to the Jigsaw Exchange (and got some more) and called into the library. I had two work calls to make in the afternoon. Nicky got Steve’s bed ready and baked a lemon cake for church and muffins for us. Steve arrived late afternoon and helped us move a library table to give him more space in the sewing room. There was time for a couple of games of Scrabble before dinner, and then Triominos and Rummy-O after dinner (aided by some Lambrusco).

The weather has been very wet this weekend. Steve departed shortly after Nicky left for church. She came home afterwards with a couple of bangers from the Sausage Sizzle, which we reheated and enjoyed for lunch. We have had a quiet afternoon reading and jigsawing. I made a loaf of fruit bread for tea.

Take care, Rick
