Not cake, brioche

The emotional high’s and low’s with buying the section we like and designing the house we want have continued this week, and I suspect they will for awhile. On the house front our builder has been great at including our modifications and making some good suggestions. On the section front, we asked the estate agent to get the ball rolling on a contract to purchase on Monday. On Wednesday, due to issues the vendor is having with the council, the agent called us to say it might all be off. On Friday, she called so say a contract had just been emailed to us, so we are on again. However, a range of clauses have been added which could be problematic, so we will go and have a chat (we hope) with one of our lawyers colleagues as he is on holiday for the duration fo the school holidays!

Even though the above issues have been the backdrop to our week, we have done other things to, sometimes for a bit of distraction. Nicky has started helping at and participating in Church Seniors on Monday and Friday mornings. It’s early days but seems to be going OK so far. She made orange and rasin brioche which was really good, especially when still warm from the oven. She had her hair done, went to Book Chat and did another session of volunteering in Henderson.

I have had a quiet week with work, doing just one on-site job, but a few remote jobs as and when required. Deep and Meaningful was good on Thursday evening and with a better than expected turnout with the heavy rain. Friday evening I was up at The Block for a leisurely beer.

Between us, laundry has been done, creases re-arranged with a hot iron, and meals prepared and consumed. On Wednesday we visited Becky to see her and their 32 sqm portable house. Very cosy and well designed, it was interesting to see. We had a Loughborough Alumni reunion in town late on Thursday afternoon, meeting a couple of other graduates, one who did Ergonomics just a year behind me!

We have also watched a couple of very good DVD’s this week, The Keeper of Lost Causes, a Department Q mystery, and A Man Called Ove, a funny, moving and gentle tale of a Swedish widower coming to terms with his change of circumstance. On Friday afternoon we started my birthday jigsaw, and it saw us through until bed time yesterday. The weather has been cold but sunny over the weekend, so I was out at Karekare again this morning while Nicky was at church. She has been over to Stella’s for Scrabbling this afternoon.

Take care, Rick
