Football is going somewhere.
We have got through to the semi-finals, and by this time next week we will know whether or not we have made it to the final!!!! The level of excitement here about the World Cup and England’s success could at best be described as minimal. The only person I have encountered who wanted to talk about the tournament was my barber, a lovely Chinese lady called Jo, who runs the Baroness Barber up the road ($10 for a numbered cut, or seniors). I got the impression that she was very pleased to finally have a customer willing to exchange thoughts and reactions on the matches so far. She cut my hair too. The staff at the library are quite amused by Nicky’s enthusiasm at England’s success.
Unfortunately the England v Sweden game wasn’t shown on free TV this morning, but we got to see highlights later. The England v Columbia game was on live, starting at 6am, so I was up to watch that on Wednesday, and we also saw the Denmark v Croatia match at the same time on Monday. Nicky later went up into the Bay to do some shopping, and then we tootled down to New Lynn to collect her travel documents. Much of the rest of the day was baking - savoury muffins and beer scones - all very nice and freezer filling.
I have got a few morning walks in this week as work has been thin on the ground. Nicky has had a steady week at work, but we both feel we are dealing with low grade infections; general tiredness, sore throat (N) and aching joints (R).
We had a bit of excitement on Wednesday evening with a power cut around 8pm. As all our heating is electric and we are in the middle of winter we decided on an early night. About an hour or so later once I had gone to bed but not got to sleep the power came back on. On Thursday Nicky had a morning tea for her boss Penny’s birthday. Much food was provided, consumed and enjoyed and Penny appreciated the effort. Unfortunately a couple of our food cover nets were damaged by tea lights whose flames could no longer be seen in the daylight, so Nicky is going to have a go at repairing them. I also had a good evening out at Deep & Meaningful, but didn’t linger too long afterwards with feeling a little under the weather.
Nicky had a poor night and didn’t feel well enough for work on Friday, but she was cheered by the lovely sunny day. I got shopping and laundry done and ended the day up The Block.
On Saturday morning Nicky was up early and feeling somewhat improved so went off to the Arataki Visitors Centre again to see the Matariki stars rising. She wasn’t alone, and had the treat of another free breakfast and a presentation by some astronomers, which was helpful as it was too cloudy to see the actual star cluster. She got home in time to turn herself round before going off to work and then Scrabble at Stella’s. I stayed home and watched the first two quarter finals which I had recorded.
Today after church Nicky went off to prison. The rain which we have been expecting didn’t arrive until the evening, but we have been getting warnings about the weather coming up from the south for the next couple of days.
Take care, Rick.
