Lovely grub

This week has been bookended by a public holiday (Labour Day) at the beginning, and a family day at the end.

Labour Day started chilly but quite bright, even though there was some cloud around. We started off with a gentle breakfast of scrambled egg and avocado on toast followed by toasted cinnamon brioche. After some obligatory mowing of the grass and ironing of the clothes, we went off to Dress Smart in Onehunga and Sylvia Park so that Nicky could buy me Christmas gift clothes. It wasn’t as much fun as last year but the trip was successful. Nicky then nipped over to Henderson for Scrabble. In the evening we watched a film on DVD, Eye in the Sky, which Nicky had brought home because of Helen Mirren and Alan Rickman featuring in it. The film was very good - basically an analysis of the complex moral and logistical issues around drone warfare. Well worth watching.

The rest of the week has been pretty routine, with the library being busy, the washing machine and clothes line getting regular use, and I had a busy end-of-week with working culminating on Saturday lunchtime. Nicky also had life group and prayer group, and I had a D&M meeting up north.

Nicky spent most of yesterday cleaning the house, and starting preparations for today. It would have been Ruth’s 100th birthday today, so Nicky decided to spend a little of her legacy on celebrating the anniversary. In addition, Claire had been asked to spend some more time on the Auckland office, starting on Monday morning, so she flew up this morning and was here in time for the celebration.

Before going off to church Nicky started the day making lemonade scones, while I went off to Dizengoff to collect goodies which we had ordered last week. I also picked up a platter of wraps from our local Subway, and after collecting Claire from the airport we raided the supermarket for some additional savoury items. We had just got these ready as people started to arrive, and we had a very pleasant afternoon catching up.

The table, following the devastating attentions of the family.

It has been a sunny afternoon so after we had cleared up and watched the news, we took Claire into town to do the Magenta Walkway as the sun set behind the Waitakeres. It was a good walk though the wind was very brisk. We finished the day with lobs, tea and telly.

Take care, Rick
