The weather has been listening

In the “Quips and Quotes” section of The Listener recently, these was a quote which has stuck in my mind: “The economy needs economists in the way the weather needs weather forecasters”. I know exactly what they mean, but I think that for most of this week the weather has been listening to the forecasters, as along with Thursday being the first day of spring, the weather has been very spring-like. Mild, often sunny, and decidedly optimistic.

The library has been steady, and on the verge of quiet this week. Nicky has commented that the number of borrowers seems to have dropped. After the initial flurry following the refurbishment re-opening, the numbers don’t seem to have returned to their previous levels. I too have had a quiet week work-wise with just one job, until Friday, which was a bit manic. Three separate visits to one customer combined with a 5.30pm appointment in Takapuna.

We have had a few sociable evenings with Nicky at life group, and me to Deep and Meaningful (Whangaparaoa branch) and also up to The Block for a beer.

The beer might have been the last straw for me, as even though I only had one bottle, I had a bit of a headache on Saturday morning which quickly got considerably worse with my first cup of tea of the day, and along with a feeling of being spaced out and unsteady for quite awhile. I suspect dehydration from lack of attention to my liquid consumption on Friday. So, we took yesterday morning at a slow pace, Nicky pottering while I worked on the Mac which I had brought home from Friday’s visit to Takapuna. By the time that was done I was feeling brighter, so we headed off to Danske Mobler and after much sitting around ordered two new chairs. Our wonderful Ekorness chairs which we purchased from The House of Fraser in Maidstone in 1986 are showing their age, so we now have a new pair of Ekorness chairs on the way from Norway, with an ETA of next March. We decided to have a celebratory lunch so bought very well filled bacon and egg pie from Nosh, and pastries and tomato bread from a French patisserie.

The weather hasn’t been so promising today, and the rain has now started. I ironed this morning while Nicky was at church, and then I returned the computer equipment to my Takapuna customer while Nicky cut the grass. Stella came over for lunch and afternoon Scrabble, and Nicky is now making muffins for tea. I have been enjoying my Fathers Day chocolate from Ocho in Dunedin and reading The Bertie Project. This evening will be tellyboxing.

Take care, Rick
