Tropical-ish end to January
The weather has been a little tropical this week - hot, quite humid, and with the occasional downpour. Work has been steady for Nicky, with not too many really busy periods, but she finished the working week feeling quite unwell with a cold. Work has picked up for me with something on every day, though not all of it generating income.
On Wednesday morning we got the swimming voucher used with a pre-breakfast dip at Pt Erin. This is an open air pool, which is nicely laid out though looking a little tired. We had a good swim and thought the prices for the multi-swim passes were good so may purchase in the future. The main downside is the pool is only open in the summer.
This weekend is Auckland Anniversary weekend, so we get tomorrow off. There is always lots on but we decided to have a gentle day yesterday with Nicky not feeling her normal self even though she was improved.
First commitment was Nicky seeing the GP, which turned out to be very good news as her Thursday morning blood test showed that her pre-diabetic reading of 49 and come down to 32.
When she returned we went off to breakfast at Deco, the café next to Lopdell House art gallery in Titirangi. Lisa and Paul gave me a voucher to use there for taking their wedding photographs. We both ordered the home made potato rosti with poached eggs, hollandaise and vine tomato. Nicky had salmon with hers and I had bacon and a side of mushrooms with mine. We both enjoyed very this much, so followed with toast and tea (N) and coffee (R). We then had a leisurely stroll round the art gallery to work off the calories.
It had turned into a gorgeous sunny day by late morning so we enjoyed being at home. Steve and Stella came round for Scrabble in the afternoon, and then we had chicken salad on the Rattigan and stayed outside reading until the sun dropped below the kindy building next door. We came in and had a pot of tea with a couple of episodes of Overground, a 2013 documentary about the rail system in the UK.
We concluded the day with an evening excursion to Tamiki Drive to see a searchlight beaming from Rangitoto, organised by local iwi to celebrate the waka events over the anniversary weekend.
Today has again been warm (but not as wet as we expected) and Jancis has returned from her car rally in Dunedin. She came round after church to regale us with her adventures over the last three weeks. She stayed for lunch and then went down to the waterfront with us to have a wander round some of the Anniversary events. I found I did’t particularly enjoy this as there was just too much loud music, too many un-healthy food vendors, and too many people. The good bits were outnumbered by the not-so good bits. Maybe I am getting old.
Take care, Rick
