1st Birthday

As August progresses we are starting to notice the additional daylight at both ends of the day. It is particularly welcome in the early evening. Apparently, according to some, we are starting to get the first signs of spring (which I could understand today), but with the wind and rain and temperatures down to 3° it has felt more wintery than springlike.

I have had a busy week with work, Thursday was particularly long but good. I have still had plenty of time at home for doing my contracted duties (washing, ironing, shopping, cooking), and a couple of evenings out. Tuesday was a Chamber of Commerce event and Thursday the MeetUp group which I attend.

Nicky’s week at work has been steady with busy periods. There are still bugs about but she has been on the mend most of the week, but not sure if she was coming down with another bout of something yesterday. Shani (daughter of Nicky’s nice Kim) joined us for dinner on Wednesday as she has some drama rehearsals nearby for a few weeks, and then Nicky had her life group in the evening.

Nicky took Friday off work to attend a Corrections Induction course at the prison. They have to do one every year. She and the four ladies she went with came back to us for lunch, so I spent the morning making savoury tarts and accompaniments, and with all the goodies which the other’s brought we had a major feast. Nicky spent much of the afternoon cleaning while I went off to work.

Yesterday started wet, and for much of the day we had heavy showers. I had been booked to go and re-setup a network of Macs on Sunday afternoon after an office move, but the move had gone so well on Saturday morning that they called me and asked if I could materialise in Takapuna asap. Nicky had already arranged for Mary to collect her on the way to BHB Quilters, so off I went.

Quilting went very well, 15 I think, and along with Mary and Nicky’s food contributions, others also brought along eats to celebrate the group’s 1st birthday. It doesn’t seem like it was only a year ago that Nicky and Mary started the group, but it has already got a loyal and enthusiastic following and feels very well established. I think the informal atmosphere is greatly appreciated.

Today has been much sunnier than we were expecting and has turned out to be a really nice day, though still quite a bite to the wind. Nicky was in prison this morning and then over to Henderson for Scrabble this afternoon. I have done the ironing and finished reading The Revolving Door of Life, Alexander McCall Smith’s latest edition in the 44 Scotland Street series. As ever, gentle and enjoyable.

Take care, Rick
