Changeable weather

It has felt like a busy week, one way or another. Nicky has been very busy at work, what with the near permanent state of being short staffed, and the community role which the library plays which is way beyond just the lending of books.

I have had quite a bit of Mac work, with telephone support at the beginning of the week and then on-site work at the end. This later commitment stuffed up my new laundry regime as I wasn't here on Thursday and Friday to keep running outside when it started to rain. This meant we ended up doing four loads of washing on Saturday as it was also a nice day, just leaving a small amount of whites in the basket.

I also spent a significant chunk of the early part of the week typing out recipes from a pie book by a Kiwi chef who has a good reputation. The book was due back at the library this week and apparently there are 54 other borrowers waiting for it. Oh the burden of being married to someone who can find out these things! I was interrupted by Claire coming over on Wednesday, but it was good to see her for a chat and provide her with lunch. She went through her clothes which are still here and selected a big bagful to go to a charitable collection.

Nicky was in charge of morning tea on Wednesday to celebrate a work colleagues 65th birthday, and in the evening we met at Lone Star, a bar and restaurant just down the road from the library, for her Wednesday house group social. We enjoyed the company and the food, though the portions were enormous. I had steak and Nicky had pork, some of which came home in a doggy bag. The food was tasty but not exceptional, and the price reflected the portion size, but if you're hungry it's a great place to go.

On Thursday evening I took myself off to the cinema in Henderson to see Celebration Day. The film is of Led Zeppelin's first live performance in 27 years at the O2 area in December 2007 which was staged to mark the passing of the founder of Atlantic Records. The film didn't disappoint the largely mature audience.

Auckland has been hosting the the last round of the international triathlon competition this weekend, and we enjoyed watching the TV coverage of the elite women's event yesterday and the elite men's event today. The women had much better weather than the men as today has been wild, wet and cold. We took ourselves off to Avondale yesterday afternoon to do a "historic walk". The council publishes historic guides to many of the suburbs and give suggested walking routes to visit the places of interest. We have collected a number of these over the last few years so thought we would give one go and enjoyed our tour of the Avondale "town centre" and had excellent ice cream at Snack and Scoop. We discovered they have one of those machines which combines fresh fruit and vanilla ice cream to wonderful effect.

After Nicky got back from prison this morning we watched the men's triathlon and then just pottered round the house, keeping warm and dry. Tomorrow is Labour Day so we are having a three day weekend and hopefully the weather will be better too.

Take care
Rick
