Windy and MSG free week

It has been a bit of a week.

On Monday while Nicky was getting ready for work she had another migraine episode. As a result of this she only worked two half days this week, on Thursday and Friday. However, Clem called in on Monday afternoon to collect some boxes and mentioned that some people have a problem with processed meat. Nicky had eaten some at lunchtime on Sunday. Then on Tuesday (I think) Felicity phoned and suggested that flavour enhancer 621, also known as mono-sodium glutamate, might be an issue. We checked the packing for the meat and found it had 621 in it. We also found 621 in the OXO cubes which I used to make the stock for the curry which Nicky had before a previous episode, and the night before her first episode we had a Thai takeaway which could well have had MSG in it. We are not 100% sure that MSG is the trigger for Nicky's episodes as it is present in other things which she has eaten and not reacted to, but for now we are avoiding it to see what happens.

On Tuesday there was a tornado up in Albany around the time Claire was leaving campus. She wasn't directly affected by the tornado, just the resulting traffic jams. The weather at the beginning of the week was rubbish, lots of wind and rain. So much so that Mike and Helen (our visitors from last week) called back and stayed with us for a night (or 2?, I forget) and had some time in Auckland trying to avoid the worst of it, before heading off south.

Claire had a major anthropology assignment on this week which she thought she might not get done in time, but she did. She is very tired and working hard. I have had a quieter work week but have added a new customer to my growing flock.

The weather started to improve towards the end of the week, and yesterday was good and today has been gorgeous. Nicky and I walked down to the vicars to deliver some cake at a round 5ish, and it was still warm enough just for short sleeved shirts. The temperatures are unseasonably warm, but as all us optimists say, "it won't last".

Yesterday Nicky was sewing while working through the laundry backlog and I went for a long walk on Whatipu beach, the most southerly of the black Western beaches on the other side of the Waitakere Ranges. It is wide and long and quiet. I had a bit of rain but dried out by the time I got back to the car.

Today I have spent most of the day putting music on Nicky's iPad and as a consequence have been battling with authentication of purchased music in iTunes. I won in the end but it was an effort. It is Mother's Day here today so Nicky decided to make a chocolate cake from a book she has out of the library at the moment. Claire came home mid-afternoon and made us lovely cinnamon scrolls which we ate while watching a Morse DVD, along with some of the chocolate cake.

That's all for now,
Take care,
Rick
