Emily and Shona have been with us this week. They have done laundry, Sky Tower, read, Mission Bay, slept a lot, the cinema, Orewa, Wiawera (thermal pools) and almost finished the jigsaw.
I was working at Hungry Creek on Monday modelling, and this is just 5 minutes up the road from the thermal pools at Wiawera. So, I roused the girls at 7am so that they could get organised before departing on the 1 hour drive up North. Claire, Emily and Shona spent the morning wallowing and then the afternoon being shown the sights round Orewa, Red Beach and Stanmore Bay by Claire. They kindly collected me at 4pm and E&S slept most of the way home while Claire drove and I acted as tour guide.
On Tuesday evening E&S treated us to a night out at Bricklane, a local hostelry which it turned out served very good food (we had veg & meat platters with fries and wedges to share between us, then a couple of gooey desserts) prior to participating in the weekly pub quiz. We managed, with the help of the English quiz mistress, to come second from last. This was pretty good we thought as we didn't know a single one of the tunes which accompanied TV adverts (you had to say what the product was).
Thursday was a good sunny day which made the views from Sky Tower worth the effort of getting there, but the others days have been cold and quite wet. Since sometime Friday night we have been in the midst of a storm which quietens down for an hour or so a couple of times a day, but is due to last until Wednesday.
On Friday night we prepared a departing diner of smoked salmon and pasta and finished off the ice cream. Nicky went off to work on Saturday morning on the train so that Claire and I could take Emily and Shona to the airport for their 12.45 departure to Sydney. We we a little concerned that the weather would interfere with their departure but all seems to have gone OK.
On Saturday night Nicky and I went up to the hot pools at Parakia for their monthly nudist night. Nicky had not wanted to go because of the rough weather, but it quietened down around 6-ish so we went and had a very pleasant evening, with very few other people! It was bit chilly moving from pool to pool in the cold rain, but once you got warmed up in the water it was fine.
I have done two "new office set-ups" this weekend, Claire is working extra shifts at Whitcoulls this week so she has 7 days of work at some point during each day, and Nicky is hoping to have a couple of days off.
I am hoping the weather dries up a little as it is no fun getting wet on the way to work, especially as most of this week we have had no heat in the office.
Have fun yourselves,
Rick
