Wedding Anniversary

I am writing this in the middle of the night (3.30 am) because I ate and drank too much last. We went out to what turned out to be a very good restaurant called The Falls (www.thefalls.co.nz) to celebrate our 23rd wedding anniversary. It was also the first time that the three of us have been out for a meal together since arriving in NZ, just over 9 months ago.

We chose The Falls because it came out top in a reader poll in a local newspaper some months ago, and we had seen it while going to and from Henderson library and liked the look of it. Nicky popped in a few weeks back while using the car park next to it and booked for us. Nicky and I both started with soup of the day (beef and tomato), and for mains Claire and I had salmon and Nicky had pork. Claire and I shared a chocolate mouse dessert and I had a coffee with kahlua and bourbon. I also had to finish off Nicky's wine so that and having three courses is why I am suffering now. I should have known! Anyway, all the food was excellent, the service was prompt and low key, and the atmosphere was simple and warm. It was a really good Sunday evening.

Saturday was also a busy day. We were hosting a family meeting in the evening and Nicky had learned on Friday that Kenneth Prebble had died and his funeral was on Saturday at 11.00. Nicky had been up early in the morning preparing food for the evening and so didn't feel driving to the funeral, so I volunteered to chauffeur. Even though it was a sad occasion, Nicky was very pleased to meet some of the Prebble family again, especially their only daughter who was great childhood friend. Both the food and the meeting went well in the evening.

Claire's health has improved this week and she has been to the gym and back to work. She had her chest checked at the doctors because she has a cough which is still keeping her awake quite a bit, but all was OK.

Nicky went to Green Lane Hospital on Thursday to have her tooth looked at. Fortunately it is not a root canal problem, but the tooth has died and is going to have to come out and there is an abscess. They also want to give her an MRI as she is presenting some unusual symptoms. This is lucky all going to be treated through the public system (she had to take her passport with her) and so won't cost as anything which is a blessing as we don't have medical insurance yet.

Work has been much the same for all of us, and the weather has been quite mild with a couple of very wet bouts. Both Nicky and I got drenched coming home from work on Monday and Sunday had some major downpours - it was good to be inside! I am expecting the weather to get colder now we have passed the shortest day.

Bye for now,

Rick
