Visitors
You may remember, Dear Reader, that back in the days when we lived in Blockhouse Bay, Nicky ran a quilting group with Mary. That very same Mary has been to visit us this week, on her way to a family wedding in Levin.
Mary travelled from Auckland to Whanganui by bus, and was due to arrive by the Tram Shed down on Taupo Quay at 17.20 on Wednesday. Nicky and I pootled into town to meet her. The bus was half an hour late but the weather was clement and there were other travellers to chat to, so the waiting wasn’t arduous. Mary was tired after the journey, so we headed home, settled her in, had some dinner, and spent the evening catching up on news.
On Thursday morning I had a 1 hour sailing casting off at 8am, so had to be at work for 6am. It was not properly light when I got to work:
Nicky and Mary had not long since finished breakfast when I got back home, so we had a pot of tea before going off for a walk in the sunshine round Virginia Lake:
After lunch at home Nicky and Mary went to the museum while I had a bit of a snooze. They were back in time for a few hands of Rummy-O before cooking steak for dinner.
On Friday morning Nicky and Mary had a post breakfast amble, and we nipped up Durie Hill on the way to the Tram Shed for Mary’s 11.05 bus to Palmerston North. While her visit was short it was also enjoyable and it had been good to catch up with her and show her a little of where we now live.
Mary hasn’t been our only visitor. Valda has been in town this week and came over for lunch on Tuesday. Afterwards she went to home group with Nicky on what turned out to be the hottest afternoon of the week at 26º. Nicky had a vestry meeting in the evening, and I supplied mints to our first Trick-or-Treaters in Whanganui (just 2 of them with a parent chaperoning).
Yesterday was the annual Parish Fair, held at Christ Church this year. The aim was to raise $15,000. Nicky spent Friday afternoon helping with the fair preparations, then I dropped her at church on Saturday morning on my way to the wharf. Our temporary skipper this weekend has been a young lad who skippered the boat a couple of years ago but now works for Sea Link up in Auckland.
After collecting Nicky from church on my way home, we had a quiet afternoon before going out to dinner at Eleanor and Jack’s. They live just down the road. Jack runs the Jigsaw Exchange that we really appreciate using. Eleanor had produced a lovely smoked salmon and kumera rosti dish which we really enjoyed. It was another good evening.
Today Nicky dropped me at the wharf while on her early way to church, as she was on the hospitality team this morning. The Christ Church congregation ere delighted to learn over $16,000 was raised at the fair. Jacqui has been over this afternoon doing some work on her section and called in for a chat with Nicky while I was snoozing. Nicky is making tuna pancakes for tea and we will be catching up with recorded telly programmes this evening.
Take care, Rick and Nicky.
