The Mighty Banger
I’m not 60 anymore! To celebrate my 61st on Wednesday we had breakfast at the Main Street Café in Waverley. I chose this location because when we called in some months ago (on our way to see somebody about something to do with the build) I noticed their speciality was big sausages. I was a little concerned when we arrived not to see these specified on the menu, but on ordering the “big breakfast” found the 8” sausage was their standard offering, and very good it was too. Nicky enjoyed her bacon and egg butties on ciabatta, and we finished off with tea and coffee.
The day was clear and sunny which had made for a pleasant 50 minute drive (three lots of roadworks), so following breakfast we drove down to the beach, of which there were two: Long Beach and Cave Beach. A sign indicated that access to Long Beach was only suitable for tractors, so we went to Cave Beach. However, we were unable to walk to Long Beach due to the high tide. It was good to see the sea and have some fresh air.
We arrived home just as the electricians had arrived to look at the dead extractor fan in the shower room. They quickly decided it need to be replaced so fitted a new unit. We followed their departure with a pot of tea and birthday cake before heading into town to do a little shopping.
Our other big event of the week has been our first trip to Auckland since moving to Whanganui. Clem and Pat had invited us to a family lunch with it being a long weekend for the Queen’s Birthday. We had an uneventful drive up on Thursday stopping at our usual haunts. On Friday I met up with some friends from the Deep and Meaningful group. Nicky went to the cinema with Clem and Pat to see Dream Horse, which was very good. In the evening I drove to to Blockhouse Bay to meet up with the “first Friday of the Month” regulars at The Block.
The Family Lunch on Saturday was just ten of us. The food, as ever, was excellent, and it was great to see everybody again. The rain had already started when we left late in the afternoon to drive over to Stella’s, where we had a good long chat before watching Call the Midwife and then heading off to bed.
The rain has continued all day today. Nicky went over to Blockhouse Bay for church, and a good catch up with lots of people, and called in to see Dawn our ex-landlady. While she Scrabbled with Stella, Steve and Ros, I headed into town for a “speed dating” style Deep and Meaningful conversation and then visited another D&M friend. The rain has eased off a little but more is expected.
And finally Dear Reader, you may be interested to know that this is the 750th post on our blog. Thank you for hanging on in there!
Take care, Rick
