All eyes on Japan
Our focus at the beginning of the week was on house design and Nicky’s dental treatment. She already had a regular checkup appointment at the dentist for mid-day on Monday, which she was very pleased about when she started experiencing pain on Saturday. It turned out she had an abscess under a dying tooth. The dentist did some temporary work on her root canal, and prescribed antibiotics and pain killers, and she is due back in a couple of weeks for further attention. Regular consumption of pain killers helped, but she didn’t start to feel more comfortable until Thursday.
The wires have been buzzing between us and Bert the Builder with house design considerations. When we were last in Wanganui we asked Bert if there was any way the design could be changed to give us access to the view down to the river from the main living area, without going beyond our budget. He sent us a plan that gave us a view, but was a bit more than we could afford, so some changes were made. Decking and window re-positioning have also been under consideration.
On Thursday evening Nicky, along with a number of other “senior ladies”, went to see the Downton Abbey film and throughly enjoyed it, and the post-film debriefing over hot beverages. Nicky was out again on Friday evening for a Nicky Moran concert in Remuera, which was also very good.
The concert meant that Nicky missed the live coverage of the Rugby World Cup opening ceremony, but we watched the recording I had made yesterday. The first All Blacks match was on delayed terrestrial transmission (I’m not prepared to pay the $90 for Spark Sport and upgrade our broadband connection just to watch the live games) last night, but it didn’t finish until after midnight so we were very late in bed.
On the upside, Spark Sport’s internet streaming of the All Blacks match encountered technical problems, so much so that the games are now being shown free-to-air on one of the “spare” channels, so we have seen the end of Italy-Namibia, are now watching Ireland-Scotland, and will be recording England-Tonga so that we can go to bed at a reasonable time tonight - an unexpected treat.
Nicky was at BHB quilters circle yesterday, and Stella, Steve and Ros came over afterwards for Scrabble. I made some lemon curd ready for a cheesecake which I plan to make next week, and did some laundry.
The weather has been improving during the week, and the sunshine this weekend has been lovely. I went to Karekare while Nicky was at church this morning, the the warmth of the sun was overwhelmed by the cold strong southerly breeze, so I didn’t have a swim, but did find a sheltered spot in the dunes where I could drink my flask of coffee and watch the sea. We had a quiet afternoon and a snooze with both of use feeling quite jaded after our late night.
Take care, Rick
