Wellington-like
From the sublime to the ridiculous, or from feast to famine, choose whatever phrase you like dear reader, but this past week has been quite different from the previous week. I think the only similarity has been work for Nicky, which has continued to be steady-to-busy. She took half a day off for her annual induction with Corrections, but it was a straight-forward labour and she was back home for lunch.
I have had no paid work at all, but seem to have been busy in the office none the less, along with my usual household duties.
The weather has gone all bi-polar and is in definite need of some lithium salts. The beginning of the week was a bit questionable, and then the wind hit the fan and from Wednesday night to Thursday we had 30 hours of continues rain, followed by winds of up to 140kph. It was like living in Wellington. Trees and power lines down all over the place, and land slips too, but fortunately non affected us directly, though it me 20 minutes to travel 500m on a bus on Thursday evening. The traffic in town as I headed to my MeetUp group was stunning.
Socially it has been a quiet week so we have ploughed through some DVD sets. We thoroughly enjoyed Michael Wood’s 6 part BBC doco on The Story of India, especially as he went right back to the beginning. Last night we watched Trumbo, as in Dalton Trumbo, one of the Hollywood screen writers who was blacklisted during the McCarthy era. A very well told and enlightening story. We also watched Brave on TV for something light. It’s a Pixar “fairytale” about a Scottish princess. It was up to Pixar’s usual standards so we enjoyed it, and the improvements they have made to their animation software are obvious. The princess had a stunning head of red hair.
Nicky was up to see Dr V first thing yesterday morning, and he was very pleased with all her blood test results. We had a very relaxed breakfast of boiled eggs and toast when she returned, and then due to the very pleasant sunshine had a tiki tour of all the new house builds going on in the streets around us - 6 separate sites with probably a dozen houses. Steve called in and picked Nicky up mid-afternoon for Scrabble over at Stella’s.
Today has been gorgeous; spring like, even though it’s only August and spring doesn’t start until next Thursday. While Nicky went to church I went for a walk and a paddle (sea too cold for a dip) at Karekare. We have spent the afternoon pottering with mowing and ironing. The evening will be devoted to the consumption of savoury scones and Lewis.
Take care, Rick.
