Chilly

July became August this week, and we have been finding the keeping track of which day it is, a challenge. I find this a little odd, as it has largely been a routine sort of week. Nicky has done her usual activities of church cleaning, home group and staffing the library. She also enjoyed the fashion talk at the museum on Friday. We quizzed on Wednesday coming equal second with 98 points but loosing the tie-breaker. However we now know how many sports people are competing in the Olympics…10,714!

I have had an amble everyday. This was in town on Monday while Luna had two new tyres fitted, so included a cup of coffee at The Burrow. I walked into town on Friday to the Yellow House cafe for a coffee and a catch up with Trevor, who volunteers on the boat. I hadn’t realised that his wife would be with him otherwise Nicky would have come too.

Our evenings at home have been dominated with binge watching Keeping Faith. We have now finished all three seasons, and Nicky would like to watch it all over again. We had our Community Kai at the marae on Thursday and again enjoyed it more, as there were fewer people. It makes it much easier to have a conversation when the noise level is tolerable.

While the weather was dry on Monday it was not sufficiently tempting to go outside. We were also expecting some rain (which materialised on Tuesday and Wednesday) so we started a jigsaw. This was finished on Thursday before the weather turned clear, sunny, and much colder. The MetService were reporting that it felt like -5ºC and we wouldn’t have argued with that as we looked out over the frost on yesterday morning.

We had dinner out with the quiz team last night, spending our accumulated winnings. The food at the Japanese Kitchen in the Victoria Avenue Arcade was excellent, and the staff were lovely. However, because we were a large group, we were seated in the arcade itself, outside the restaurant under a high a roof. On one of the coldest nights of the year, this was not an enjoyable experience. Nicky still doesn’t feel she has warmed up yet (Sunday afternoon) and that combined with the food having an impact on her digestion made for a difficult night and day for her. She left church earlier this morning because of feeling decidedly odd, but some fresh air helped.

Before going off to church she made focaccia for lunch after inviting Lyn from across the road over. She has been at her home in Tauranga for a few months so we were in need of a catch up. Carol, whom we also haven’t seen for ages, also called in for a while out for a walk and had a cuppa with us, so it has ben an afternoon of catching up.

Tui are enjoying the Kowhai in the front garden and one loitered long enough for me to take my best Tui photo yet:

Take care, Rick and Nicky.
