Spring on the Awa
The Waimarie Paddle Steamer sailing season has begun again this week. On Wednesday we had our “training day”. This was just the crew taking the boat out for our standard two hour cruise to see if everything on the boat worked and the crew could remember what to do and when. On the whole it went well. The problem we had last year with the generator was diagnosed as being caused by a pump in the engine room drawing too much current.
On Saturday we did two trips. In the morning it was a special for all the stakeholders in the boat - people who help fund and promote the boat. We received a Maori blessing and send off from the Putiki Marae canoe paddlers. Nicky came along too and had some interesting conversations with other passengers. In the afternoon we sailed a private charter. Today we had our first public sailing, billed as a Father’s Day special with today being Father’s Day. Dads got a free drink of their choice.
The weather has been just gorgeous for all four sailings, as it has been for most of the week. Clear blue skies with lots of sunshine, but often a cool breeze:
I had chance on Wednesday to take this picture of where the river bank is being reinforced after a slip earlier in the year:
Nicky has been doing all her usual activities with church cleaning, Alpha course kitchen duty, home group and staffing the Aramoho Library. While I was sailing on Wednesday she vacuumed and mopped all the floors at home. We came 4th at the quiz in the evening, with 96 points.
On Thursday evening we attended a fundraising quiz at Christ Church Community Centre, accompanied by our neighbours Mark and Krystyna, and Danny from our Wednesday quiz team. It was quite a different event, but we rather enjoyed it and came first equal.
Jacqui, our next door neighbour who is selling her section, was doing some work on it on Friday so came over for a cuppa in the afternoon. It was good to catch up and she may have a buyer. We went in town early evening for a talk on The Chimes of Whanganui which was interesting and enjoyable. On the way home we bought fish and chips for dinner.
On Saturday afternoon Nicky went along to church to help with the craft preparations for the Parish Fair in November. Whilst I was sailing, Nicky went to church as usual this morning. We have had a quiet afternoon with Nicky cooking tuna and pasta for dinner, followed an evening of telly.
Take care, Rick and Nicky.
