Top of the Table
It has been hot, sunny and wet this week, sometimes all at once.
Nicky has worked in the garden as often as possible, but producing her final roster for St John’s has taken much of her time. She had a hairdressing appointment on Tuesday, and a meeting at church in the afternoon to go through Vestry Management. On Thursday she staffed the Community Library and we reached 32ºC. In the early hours of Friday morning she was up, along with a number of others, to watch Reg’s funeral which was streamed from the UK.
The pumpkin which Nicky planted a few weeks ago is now growing almost before our eyes, and the leaves are making quite a display against the fence:
My sailings haver been curtailed this week. Monday was OK even though there was more water than usual in the river. Our Wednesday sailing was cancelled due to insufficient passengers. Our Saturday sailing was cancelled for safety, as the river was running very high and very fast with the rain coming down from the mountains. We had a three hour charter today after our morning sailing, both going well.
On Friday it was two years since this vehicle arrived…
…and delivered all our possessions. We had a very nice bottle of dessert wine in the evening to celebrate, whilst binge watching Crossfire, a drama about a mass shooting at a holiday resort hotel.
You may recall, our line trimmer (strimmer) stopped working during the week prior to the Open Garden. It turned out that it was going to cost more to repair than to replace, so this week I purchased a new one and I started getting to grips with the grass again yesterday.
During the very heavy rain on Friday afternoon, the drainage which I had installed by the side of the drive to take away the runoff started to lift. The rain was getting underneath it and pushing it up. I spent some time on Saturday trying to adjust it but I’m not convinced that it is any different.
Finally this week, one more thing to celebrate: Sheffield Wednesday beat Plymouth Argyle 1-0 and consequently went to the top of the table. It’s only the Third Division (though it’s not called that anymore), but it is still an achievement. Go the Owls!!
Take care, Rick and Nicky.
