Hamming it up
Our weather this week has been much more settled, though we expect that to soon change with cyclone Gabrielle approaching. Most days have been warm and sunny, with just some odd bits of rain.
None of my sailings have been cancelled, and I think today was my 100th outing. My steering still needs some practice as I don’t always get us through the bridges in a straight line, but I haven’t hit anything. We had an evening sailing yesterday, with a Country & Western singer performing on the boat.
Along with doing the household chores, Nicky has started with brass cleaning and vestry supplies management this week. She also had her usual clutch of borrowers at the Aramoho Community Library.
On Tuesday we went to lunch at Reba & Imail’s home for a home group social to mark the beginning of the new “season”. This turned out to be a major meal, with a wide range of dishes primarily prepared by the hosts, and desserts provided by the visitors (Nicky made a lovely fruit salad). We both needed a snooze when we returned home. We aren’t used to midday heavy meals.
On Thursday we had our first shared Community Kai of the year at the Te Ao Hou Marae. It was another good evening and we enjoyed catching up with familiar faces and meeting new ones. There were many visiting students from the USA.
I bought some ham earlier in the week to make chicken and ham pie. I didn’t use it all, so on Friday we had ham, egg and chips for dinner as a treat! Nicky has used the last of the ham today in a tasty pasta and cheese dish.
We had a FaceTime chat with Jancis, who is looking well and needed a bit of technology assistance. We do hope Jancis is able to visit Aotearoa again, but appreciate that it is a very long way.
On the “not-so-fun” side of life, we received an email this week from our LPG supplier informing us that they will no longer deliver gas to us, as our installation is not compliant. Apparently the cylinders are too close to the site of ignition. This was a bit of a shock as nothing has changed since they started supplying us two years ago. The change in compliance has come about, because of them “up-skilling” their delivery staff who spotted the close proximity. We have started the process of finding out what needs to be done to restore our compliance. Whanganui District Council have already advised us that this isn’t within the Code of Compliance they inspect.
As the TV series we are watching start to come to an end, we are pleased that a new series of The Great British Sewing Bee has started. Even I enjoy it. I am amazed by the sewers creativity and ingenuity, though Nicky has to explain some of the technical bits to me. We also watched The Green Book, which won Best Picture at the Oscars in 2019. It was very good and well worth seeking out.
We were given a large amount of lavender yesterday by Mark (next door but one), and the pumpkin is now aiming for world domination:
Take care, especially if you are in Thames and Auckland, Rick and Nicky
