Testing times

Ill health has dominated our week, with my cold becoming progressively worse and continuing to linger even though I have improved in the last few days. Nicky has also succumbed again, starting to feel unwell some hours after her influenza vaccination. As a result, we both went for PCR tests on Thursday and were informed 16 hours later that we were both Covid negative. The RATs appear to have been accurate. As a consequence, we haven’t done much this week, and most regretfully cancelled our planned  trip to Waitarere Beach to meet up with the Hanlon Adventurers. This was a disappointment, but they were able to eat our fish and chips so they didn’t go to waist (ours).

Monday was Anzac Day. We enjoyed waiting for the fly past in the sunshine and seeing the view down the Whanganui River:

We had been up early in the morning, so watched the dawn service on TV, not realising there was one up at the cemetery. Nicky made lovely Anzac biscuits with reduced sugar, no coconut (at my request) and Fix & Fogg Granola Peanut Butter. There aren’t any left. Nicky had a St John’s meeting in the evening and I had a FaceTime chat with Jancis.

The weather has been gorgeous all week. A high pressure system has settled over us, so we are having clear nights and days. Cool starts and ends, but lovely sunshine during the day. The solar gain in the living area has been great.

Nicky had many hours visiting Frances (Mrs Egg) on Wednesday, and returned with no Anzac biscuits but lots of plants. Some of these have already gone into the bed on the south side of the retaining wall.

With the weather being so lovely and fancying a change of activity, we went for a walk by the river yesterday. We over-estimated our energy levels and were very tired by the time we got home. However, we had some lovely views and discovered parts of town we have never visited before. The brick sculpture of a train was something we didn’t know about and we enjoyed:

Nicky was up early today making a double batch of focaccia for lunch for us today and shared food at St John’s for the AGM. Steve and Ros called in at lunchtime and Nicky was pleased to see them even though it was only for a short period as she had another AGM to attend, at Christ Church in town. We plan a quiet evening watching the telly box.

Take care, Rick and Nicky.
