A fridge called Jim
There is a TV advertisement at the moment about a fridge that you can talk to and that will speak recipes for you. This implies to me that it has some sort of computer technology, and these sort of things usually require the owner/user to give it a name. This is so that it can be identified on the network and in the case of voice activated devices the name can be used as an “initiator command”. If I was to buy one of these fridges, I would call it Jim, so that I could say “What’s the recipe today Jim?” The relevance of this will only be obvious to those who remember the Jimmy Young show on BBC radio in the 1960’s. Every weekday morning he would read out a recipe (very slowly and with much repetition), and the item was introduced by a very squeaky (think helium) voice shouting “What’s the recipe today Jim?” It is one of my fondest pre-school memories so I would definitely call my fridge Jim.
As some of you will have noticed, December has started this week, so Christmas is now looming larger as the descent down the slippery slope accelerates. Our weather has gone all warm-to-hot sunny and summery, thus again dashing my hopes for a white Christmas. We are starting to regularly use The Rattigan for lunches and dinner, though we did have some major rain on Wednesday evening.
Nicky spent much of Monday wrapping up Christmas presents after we had a leisurely breakfast. She has had a better work at work, though still very busy. She went up to church for the Advent service on Wednesday evening and I put up the outside lairy fights and Advent lights.
Work has been very thin for me this week. I collected a Mac for upgrading over the weekend and went to look at another one in town yesterday while Nicky was at work. However, in addition to my usual domestic duties I have had a couple of evenings out (D&M and Drinks at The Block) and on Friday walked up Mt Auckland with an acquaintance from the camera club that I used to belong to. I found the 10km quite hard as all the terrain was very uneven so I spent most of the time looking at my feet and watching for trip and slip hazards. Some of the views were OK though.
Today while Nicky was at church I went to Karekare for a walk and a swim, and then after lunch we went to an open home down the road where two new 5 bed properties have been built. We liked the design and I will try and go to the auction next week to see what they sell for. It will be tellybox again this evening.
Take care, Rick
