A few special events
We have had a number of significant events this week.
Mike Cox and his friend Tom arrived Monday lunchtime to spend their last few days in NZ with us, before returning to the UK via a week in Fiji. They spent Monday afternoon sorting out travel plans and money for Fiji. On Tuesday they met up with some of the trip organisers that they came over with and some of the other travellers, and then on Wednesday had a quiet day preparing to leave. They both seem to have enjoyed their months in NZ.
On Wednesday it was our 26th wedding anniversary. As this coincided with Mike and Tom's last day in NZ we had steak and garlic chicken with courgette provençal and mushrooms in a white wine sauce for dinner. The sauce didn't turn out quite right so I need to do a bit of research to figure out what I did wrong, but the winter pudding went down very well. The treacle tart and golden slices also worked out quite well as they were not too sweet. We had the last bottle of excellent Champagne which Moir and Peter had sent us for our 25th and thoroughly enjoyed it. We then stayed up too late playing Trivial Pursuit Globetrotter Edition.
We we up at 4am on Thursday morning to take Mike and Tom to the airport. Fortunately the ash cloud from Chile didn't cause them any problems. However, the sebaceous cyst on my back did. I had it removed 5 years ago but it has been returning almost ever since and getting quite large. I noticed when I got back from the airport on Thursday morning that my shirt was wet - it had started erupting. So, I toddled off to the Doctors and as soon as the GP saw it he started draining it. Then he gave me a local anaesthetic and drained it some more. He prescribed two lots of antibiotics and some pain killers and arranged for the district nurse to come and change the dressing and do some more drainage on Friday. This she did, which was really painful, just before Claire went off to Albany for her last exam of this semester, which went OK.
When the nurse and Claire left I felt OK though in quite a bit of pain, but then I suddenly started shivering and couldn't stop. It was a cold day wet day and I had been topless for quite awhile as the nurse worked on my wound, but I just couldn't get warm. Moving then turned out to be very painful but I managed to get Claire's quillo and after half an hour or so started to improve. It was almost like being in shock.
I have been into the Home Care department at the Green Lane Clinical Centre (the old National Women's Hospital for those who know) the last two mornings for more drainage and re-dressing. Nicky has come with me as driving there was fine, but driving home would have been a whole different ball game. I have to continue going every day so Claire is going to come with me. I have had a much better day today (Sunday) than yesterday as I had a number of periods of feeling quite bad yesterday and many of my other back muscles feeling sore. On the recommendation of one of the nurses I am taking pain killers on a regular basis as opposed to when I think I need them and this seems to be helping.
Nicky has had another full and busy week at work, and has been into prison this afternoon. She spent yesterday on laundry duty though the weather was too wet to dry things outside - today has been much better and we have had a few hours of sun this afternoon which I have really enjoyed. It makes the wintery days more bearable. I haven't had any Mac work this week but there may be some on the horizon for next week. We didn't go for a wallow in the hot pools yesterday because of me having to keep my wound dry.
Steve is coming over shortly for Scrabble and their is a "good" film on this evening - Doubt. Nicky brought "Peirrepoint" home on DVD which we watched on Friday night. Very compelling and very good. It is about England's last executioner.
That's all for now, take care,
Rick
