Easter Weekend

The Easter weekend has been a very welcome break for all of us, though tainted with the news of my fathers death (see previous entry). We get very little chance to do things together these days due to our work schedules, so we decided that we should have a family on day on Good Friday.

The weather has been gorgeous all weekend apart from today - it is a bit cloudy but still in the low 20's, and now the sun is coming out as I write! On Good Friday we didn't have an early start what with having a lie-in and then Nicky needed me to massage her back as she has pulled something painful. So, by lunchtime we were armed with picnic and ready for our first family attempt at One Tree Hill. This is situated in Cornwall Park, about 25 mins drive due East of us. We parked, and then had a lovely couple of hours strolling up the hill, having our picnic and a snooze, and then coming down the hill via the "alternative" route which happened to pass the ice cream kiosk. Testing of said dairy product was undertaken, scoring two very goods and an OK. We returned home replete with exercise and ice cream and found Gill's messages about my dad. Steve and Ros arrived about 5 for a couple of games of scrabble, while Claire and I entertained ourselves with my Scalextric which I located in the garage while looking for Nikcy's/Claire's guitar (which I didn't find). I have discovered an excellent model shop near the new railway station in Newmarket and they sell a whole range of Scalextric stuff which is new to me.

Saturday was back to normal with both the Nicky and Claire working, and me sunbathing on the "patio". We watched a film in the evening which Claire had been loaned by a colleague at the museum.

On Easter Sunday Nicky went off to church while Claire snoozed and I pottered. I really wanted to go to the beach at Uretiti so set off after Nicky got back from church. I just felt the space and the place would help me start to come to terms with my fathers death, and I think it has. It took me a long time to get there due to poor navigation on my part, but the 1.5 hour detour I took was through some wonderful scenery. I am starting to notice however how I am starting take wonderful scenery for granted. Uretiti is a place I am sure my father would have enjoyed when his health and eyesight was better.

Today, Easter Monday, we have had another gentle start to the day. We had a good long chat with Moira on the phone after breakfast, and Nicky did some laundry while I washed the car - I got Lilly rather dirty yesterday on my detour. Claire is on duty at the museum this afternoon, and we are planning an evening of mah-jong as we have not played for awhile.
